Delays

A few months ago, I’d had a plan for the next few pages of the comic. It take place during Alice & Violet’s ride home after visiting Daisy, with Violet asking for (and getting) more information about the Disney incident. Three pages, one recyclable background, pretty simple. But also not very interesting.

I’d planned on drawing those three pages while in Michigan for the summer, but work and other things have kept me too distracted to do that. The same thing that has happened to me every summer for like the past decade, but hey, maybe this year would have been different?

One benefit to being kept away from the comic, is I’ve had time to improve on it. Instead of Alice & Vi’s ride home, the idea now is to pick up right where the last page left off, and have Daisy provide much of the information herself. The script isn’t all that different from before, though it’s quite literally back to the drawing board in terms of panel layouts. If I can re-use the backgrounds from the previous pages, it’ll be that much easier.

Because of how long this chapter has dragging on for, there are some segments that I’d planned but that will have to cut or repurposed later. One bit would have had Mary pop in for a visit, mostly as an excuse to tease more background detail about both her and Daisy.

Another would have had Daisy call or video chat two other friends (separately) – Mimi, and a girl I still don’t have a name for but have referred to as “chibi Hitomi”. Aside from introducing these characters, they would have provided some more world-building, but otherwise didn’t have much to do with Daisy’s burn-out.

A segment I’d felt I would need to cut, but don’t want to, involves an attempted robbery at the diner. In the past year or two I’d felt overwhelmed and just wanted to finish this chapter as quickly as possible, but this is one segment that simply can’t be spun off into a later chapter. And it would pay off a thing or two.

There is a completely separate story that has also been delayed for years, that I’m still trying to figure out how to finish & release. It would have followed up on some of the reveals from Toxic Candy, and delved a bit into how Candice’s family and business operate.

As a comic, the main thing that kept me from drawing this story is/was the backgrounds. Drawing backgrounds in general is one of my least favorite things, but in this case I simply couldn’t find decent reference for mansion interiors and the camera angles I’d had in mind.

At some point I’d decided that it might be much easier to release this story as a novella, either lightly illustrated or just as text. And one version of the story or another was posted for my patrons to read, and then I just forgot to finish it so that it could be released for everyone. I do think about it every so often, but it keeps getting pushed aside by higher-priority things.

Out of Town

The current comic’s title is getting more and more appropriate…  ideally, the second page would have been posted no later than a week ago.  I’ve been out of town for most of the month, though, and won’t get home until the end of next week.  I did bring my gear with me so that I could get some work done, but the amount of activity in this house – particularly from my youngest niece – makes it difficult to work on anything.

Here’s one image I completed earlier this month, of Daisy and her sister Rose as kids –

I’ve also recently finished a pinup of Daisy’s aunt Mercy, for my Patreon page. I may post it on my DeviantArt and Tumblr pages later, but the more revealing alternates will be patron-exclusive.  For now, here’s a preview –

If you only follow me on this site and thus have no idea who Mercy is, she’ll be featured in the next comic or two after “Late Again” is finished.

On a different note, I’ve been giving some thought lately to accepting 3D commissions.  I used to think they were out of the question, because 3D is so much more time-consuming than drawing, and thus more expensive.  Now I’m looking at it like, I already work freelance, so anyone who wants a 3D commission would simply be a new client.  That is, if they can afford it.

Thinking more ambitiously, and maybe daydreaming a bit, this could be a rare opportunity.  For years I’d look at the variety of artwork drawn by independent artists and posted online, and wish that these characters and stories could be animated.  Now, the right combination of elements could allow that to happen.  I’m willing to model and even rig characters for those who can afford it.  Those who sadly can’t afford it could turn to either Kickstarter or IndiGoGo for funding.  These models could even be prepped for Source FilmMaker, if the client chooses, allowing them to animate them!

Livestream Recap

The other day I did my first livestream, and today I’ve posted a condensed version of the first part on Youtube –

Nothing too special, just me scribbling thumbnail sketches, answering questions, and giving a little insight into my characters, plus some teases of things coming up.  It was fun enough that I might have to do these on a regular basis!  🙂

My first patron-supported pinup!

My Patreon campaign is live, and now I’ve uploaded my first patron-supported pair of images!  Here’s a preview of the primary image on DeviantArt, along with a tease of its exclusive alternate version –

Posting this pinup also cleared up a lot about how Patreon works… and helped me to determine that a per-image campaign was a bit too confusing, for both me and for potential patrons.  To simplify things, I’ve switched it to a monthly campaign, and have rearranged my reward tiers a little –

  • $1 per month gets you access to the Patron-only feed
  • $5 per month includes NSFW artwork, such as the occasional nude variant for otherwise normal images.  Patrons in this tier can also offer suggestions for future images.  If an idea is fun enough – or inspires a fun scenario – then I’ll make it happen!
  • $10 per month includes high-resolution images, as well as a “supported by” credit on the first page of each upcoming chapter to Daisy’s Diner.

I’m even debating a $20 and possibly even $40 tier, which would offer single- and two-character sketch commissions as their reward, respectively.  The only reason I hesitate to add these options, is because I never know what my freelance schedule will be like from one month to the next.  I’d hate to have work force me into a situation where un-drawn commissions just keep piling up for months on end.  I’ve seen it happen to other artists, and while their fans have typically been forgiving and understanding, that didn’t make it any less stressful…

Support Daisy’s Diner on Patreon!

banner-patreon2After thinking about it (and overthinking it) for the past couple of weeks, I’ve finally started a Patreon campaign!

If you’re not familiar with Patreon, it’s basically open-ended crowdfunding.  Patrons can pledge their support to artists on a per-month or per-work basis, depending on the campaign.  My campaign is per-image, that way Patrons are only billed when I post something new.

Currently there are 3 tiers –

  • $1 – The Early Bird Special.  Pledging this amount allows Patrons to see the finished images before they’re posted anywhere else.
  • $3 – The Lunchtime Rush.  On top of early access, Patrons will get to see how a typical image or comic page comes together, and can suggest costumes, poses, and themes for illustrations.
  • $5 – Dinner and a Show.  All of the above, plus high resolution images and/or layers PSDs when higher resolutions aren’t available, and the occasional nude alternate to clothed pinups

Worth noting is that my art will not be Patreon-exclusive.  I’ll still be posting finished images & pages for free here, and on DA, Tumblr, and Facebook, but Patrons will get the images anywhere from a day to a week in advance.

Daisy, now available on Shapeways!

My second Daisy print has arrived from Shapeways, and in one piece, I’m happy to report!  I think it turned out quite nicely –

DaisyFig2_09Daisy figure with base It’s available for sale now, in two flavors – towel, and no towel.

DaisyFig2_08

And since this time I remembered to hit the record button on my camera, here’s an unboxing video –

The one thing that disappoints me about 3D printing?  Chances are, Daisy will be the only character I can offer.  Taller characters like Mary or Rose would cost too much in materials alone.  A Violet figure might be possible, once I have her modeled.  She’s taller than Daisy, but not as tall as Mary, and is also thinner overall.  With luck, she might end up using roughly the same amount of material as Daisy.

Making the figures smaller is, unfortunately, not an option.  Certain areas – like Daisy’s fingers, ears, and hair swirls – are already too close to the minimum required thickness for printing.

Catching up

There’s still one more page left to the current comic, but I let myself get distracted by other things this past week.  One of those things was this image of Daisy meeting her younger self –

Daisy & lil Daisy-01

I also did a pair of commissions for Hatescomputers over on DA, first with Daisy dress as Princess Jasmine from Disney’s Aladdin –

Daisy Jasmine

And another with Daisy & Bill (who I’m still trying to find a purpose for) as Adam & Eve –

Bill & Daisy - Adam & Eve

Now hopefully this week I can get the next comic page finished, before my next contract starts…

It’s Here!!

After over a month of back-and-forth, and anticipation, my Daisy print from Shapeways has arrived!

DaisyFig_01

…and her hand broke off in-transit.

DaisyFig_03

Broken hand aside, this turned out better than I expected.  I don’t think the pictures do it justice.  Yes, the surface has a slight grain to it, and some banding, but these are only noticeable if you’re inspecting the figure up close.

DaisyFig_04

I’m going to go back and thicken her wrist a little, so that hopefully it won’t break in future prints.  Otherwise, I’d say it’s buyer beware…

Merciful Update

Last week I decided to take a detour from the comic, so that I could get some more work in on one of my 3D characters before my next contract starts.  The character is another that I’ve been drawing for years, and will make her official debut in an upcoming chapter – Daisy’s aunt Mercy.

What can I say about Mercy without spoiling too much?  She’s a bitter chain smoking alcoholic who dresses like a nun for reasons only she fully understands, and in general is not the most pleasant person to be around.

For her model, I used Daisy’s sister, Rose, as a starting point, since they’re both roughly the same height and have the same base proportions.

One added benefit to modeling Mercy is she gives me an excuse to test out Maya’s nCloth –

Nothing fancy yet, but maybe once the other layers are in place, and I get her moving…
